The Purpose of Suicide

The purpose of suicide is to make the world a better place. From my understanding, 95% of its heirs are wrong; their deaths wreak more havoc than peace. The great tragedy of self-annihilation is that each agent believes that they are in the five percent.

I find it interesting that you find that :the purpose of suicide is to make the world a better place" or, rather that the "agents" as you call them believe this.

I don't think this is true.

I always thought that suicide was about one's need to release themselves from pain, from the burden of living, for relief. I think of suicide as being very personal and the one thing that we as human beings have control over. The ability, the power, to take ones' own life is something that is both frightening and empowering.

Though I don't advocate suicide (and you are right when you say that another's death greatly impacts the lives of those who knew the departed), I cannot help but respect the decision of those that decide to take that route.

It is often escapist, but I also think that for some it is a moment of strength in an otherwise difficult situation and I strongly believe in a person's right to choose how they live and die.

I'd love to get more of your thoughts on this. Your posts are provocative, but agonizing short...perhaps that's the plan??

hey Phoenix,

I understand where you are coming from. I think suicide is more than the need to release oneself from pain, or "the burden of living".

I think that a lot of people are in pain, and choose not to commit suicide. For some, in spite of their pain, they never even contemplate suicide.

I think for those who experience pain and choose against it... they believe that their worth, their value (despite living with pain, the burden, etc.) is greater than the amount of pain that would be relieved if they willingly died.

And I think the people who give in to the urge of comitting suicide think that their value on Earth is less than the amount of pain that would be relieved if they willingly died.

I think the decision to commit suicide is always a matter of value. I think a lot of people live with pain, sadness, depression, burdens... and choose not to commit suicide. These people, see some value in their struggle. Once the impact of the pain, burdens etcetera outweigh a persons perceived value in the world (whether it is the larger world, or their own private world amongst their family, coworkers and friends) then the option of suicide becomes a bit more tangible, a bit more real.

So I think that people who commit suicide decide that the struggle isn't worth it.... and their world (be it a large world or a small, domestic world) would be a better place without them there.

I don't think suicide is solely a selfish act.
